ICAT Blog: Article NMFC LTL Classification Changes Starting July 19

June 12, 2025

Freight Classification Development Council Density Guidelines TableEffective July 19, 2025, the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system will undergo significant changes as outlined in Docket 2025-1. These changes aim to modernize and simplify freight classification for the LTL (Less-than-Truckload) sector.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Many freight items will move from a commodity-based to a density-based classification system. This emphasizes the importance of accurate weight and dimensional measurements to accurately determine the freight class.
  • A revised 13-tier density scale will more accurately classify freight, resulting in potentially lower rates for heavier shipments.
  • Approximately 2,000 commodity listings are being consolidated to reduce redundancies and make it easier for shippers to find the appropriate classification.
  • New special handling identifiers will flag LTL freight requiring special handling, unique stowability, or additional liability considerations.
  • ClassIT+ will replace the ClassIT tool, offering a more efficient system with real-time NMFC data, improved usability, and API integration.

How can you prepare for this transition?

  • Audit Your Current Classifications: Use the NMFC Item Lookup Tool to determine if your LTL freight items will be impacted by the changes.
  • Update Your Systems: Ensure all Transportation Management Systems (TMS), Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems reflect the new classifications to avoid discrepancies.
  • Train Your Team: Work with your ICAT Logistics contact to help educate your teams and ensure they understand the new criteria.
  • Communicate with Partners: Coordinate with your LTL carriers and 3PL partners to avoid costly delays.
  • Adjust Packaging: Consider adjusting packaging to qualify for lower LTL freight classes and potentially lower shipping costs.
